Azercell heading to technological progress The Company celebrates 18th anniversary of its establishment and 5th anniversary of launching the world's first 4G by its main shareholder, TeliaSonera

18 years ago, on December 15, 1996 Azercell Telekom was founded, starting to operate as Azerbaijan’s first GSM operator. Ever since its inception 18 years back the Company has demonstraed rapid growth and managed to maintain its leading position in the competitive market. Over the years, Azercell brought and presented for a first time in Azerbaijan a number of technological innovations: GSM, pre-paid mobile services, GPRS / EDGE (mobile internet), 24/7 Customer Care, Azercell Express offices operating with “one-stop-shopping” concept, “ASAN Imza” and many others. With 51% share of Azerbaijan’s mobile market Azercell’s network covers 99,8% of the country’s population. Currently, the company’s subscriber base has exceeded 4.6 million people. In 2011 Azercell deployed 3G and in 2012 the fourth generation network – LTE in Azerbaijan. Azercell is the leader of Azerbaijan’s mobile communication industry and the biggest investor in the non-oil sector.

Azercell also celebrates an important day in the history of the global telecommunication group. 14th of December is the fifth anniversary since the introduction of 4G technology that sparked off a revolution in the field of telecommunications. The first operator that launched commercial 4G network in the world was the main shareholder of country’s mobile market leader - TeliaSonera.

4G technology was introduced for the first time in Stockholm and Oslo on December 14, 2009. Less than a year later, the TV channels broadcasted live, over 4G, the wedding ceremony of Swedish Crown Princess. The same year 4G was also introduced in Finland. TeliaSonera also was the first operator in this country to offer 4G. In 2013 TeliaSonera has successfully built a 4G network in Estonia, covering 95% of the country. Today TeliaSonera offers 4G service in 10 countries around the world. Along with Sweden, Norway and Finland, 4G network is also available in Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Spain, Moldova and Azerbaijan. TeliaSonera also managed to create a live link via 4G with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

Azercell was the first company in Azerbaijan to offer 4G services. As a member of TeliaSonera group of companies, in 2012 Azercell was the first not only in Azerbaijan, but also in the entire region to offer 4G services to its subscribers.

Celebrating 18th anniversary of its operations in our country, Azercell remains committed to its firm tradition to further implement the latest technological innovations in our Azerbaijan.
